Vital Compact is a pioneering and clinically proven therapy from Bio-Medical Research Ltd. It was developed as a non-invasive electrical stimulation device for pelvic floor stimulation, which utilises eight garment integrated external electrodes to deliver effective and global pelvic floor muscle recruitment and contraction through patented transpelvic Multipath stimulation. Through ultrasound imaging, this has been shown to deliver greater levels of pelvic floor muscle recruitment than the traditional transvaginal muscle stimulation approach:
Bio-Medical Research (BMR) Ltd., based in Galway, Ireland is a privately owned company with over 50 years experience in the research, design, manufacture and marketing of medical grade products for orthopaedic rehabilitation, urology and consumer fitness.
Every product undergoes the same rigorous research and development process, so when you recommend Vital Compact, you can be confident that it's been developed and manufactured to the highest standards and has proven to be safe and effective. Our team of scientists and R&D experts work closely with both local and international universities to conduct sophisticated clinical trials.
The patented multipath™ technology delivers highly focused, accurately coordinated and effective pelvic floor muscle contractions. It is designed to deliver multidirectional signals through the pelvic floor, enabling stronger contractions which improve the muscle tone, strength, endurance and overall control.
Clinical research conducted during the the development of Vital Compact found it to be an effective and safe intervention for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence*:
Patient Quality of Life had significantly improved at 26 weeks, 14 weeks after concluding treatment with Vital*, compared to baseline (mean score 47 at baseline compared to 81 at 26 weeks).
Vital Compact re-educates and strengthens the pelvic floor by delivering contractions of enough intensity to induce significant pelvic floor movement repetitively over a 30 minute period to induce training adaptations within the pelvic floor which may include improvements in muscle tone, strength, endurance and overall control.
Using a specifically designed butterfly electrode placed on the lower back, Vital Compact delivers Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation to the sacral area to re-educate the detrusor neuromuscular mechanism. This helps to reduce the over-activity of the detrusor mechanisms which control bladder activity.
Dr. Ruth M. Maher, Associate Director and Professor at Shenandoah University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Virginia, USA was a key developer for the Neurotech Vital. Here’s what she has to say ...
What do 1 in 3 women share in common? It’s not eye colour, hair colour or something you can visibly see. It is something which can impact a woman’s quality of life, overall health and wellness and indeed the lives of all those around her directly and indirectly. It can affect what women wear, feel, act and the type of lifestyles they lead. The answer is stress urinary incontinence. The symptoms result in urine leakage when laughing, coughing, sneezing or exercising. Though prevalent it is not a normal sign of aging and most women suffer in silence. The sheer cost of incontinence is not just the protective pads but the impact it has on women’s health across the lifespan as many will forego any type of exercise which exacerbates the associated leakage and lead to diseases or comorbidites associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
The causes of SUI are multifactorial with one being weak pelvic floor muscles. The ability to contract the pelvic floor muscles appropriately is paramount to improving the function, strength and endurance of these very important muscles which have an effect on continence and support of the pelvic organs.
However, many women either perform them incorrectly or cannot elicit any type of contraction. Learning how to perform these exercises can be extremely difficult and challenging since the muscles do not cause movement of a joint similar to arm and leg muscles so visual confirmation of a contraction is difficult to ascertain. The Neurotech Vital device was developed as a teaching and treatment tool for those with pelvic floor weakness. Maher reports that the Vital not only produces the perfect contraction it also provides a sensory awareness of the contraction and what it should feel like thus teaching the appropriate contraction. The device strengthens and enhances coordination of the muscles while minimizing muscle fatigue during stimulation. Our results have been outstanding in studies which were carried out in the USA, Ireland and Germany in women. Many women had severe leakage which resolved completely or significant improved following home use of the device.
I have worked in the area of pelvic health for 15 years and can honestly say the Vital is a ground breaking device for the treatment of SUI. In the USA the number one contributing factor to exponentially rising health care costs is over utilization of providers and services for treatments which can be safely carried out at home with a little patient education. The Vital is an in home treatment which individuals can use in the privacy of their own home. It facilitates true patient centred care and fiscally responsible delivery of care. Many women feel that stress urinary incontinence is inevitable postpartum and is a normal part of aging. I believe this misconception deters women from speaking with their health care providers regarding their incontinence.
A questionnaire on quality of life focusing on incontinence (I-QoL)2 was filled out by 70 of the participating patients at the start of treatment with NEUROTECH VITAL™ and at the end of the study period. The responses were respectively converted into a total value between 0 and 100 (lowest to highest quality of life). On this scale quality of life improved from 51 to 66 points (average total score).
Vital Compact treats Stress, Urge and Mixed incontinence. Below are suggested weekly treatment plans for each. We recommend one treatment session per day, 5 days per week, and that a 12-week treatment plan is followed to achieve optimal results.
